Only a few whisky makers can afford to disrupt the distilling process when launching special editions. The Macallan is one of them. The Archival Series, the Golden Age, or the renowned Masters of Photography Series (an extraordinary combination of whisky and photography that secured a place in the launching calendar), are some such editions.
The Macallan dares to break with the unwritten traditions of the world of whisky with The Macallan Concept No.1, which celebrates the world’s visionaries and is exclusively available at duty free stores in airports around the world. It is not available in any other store anywhere. You will need a valid passport to get your own!
The Macallan Concept No. 1 is inspired by surreal art and incorporates innovative production techniques to create an exciting new single malt. The renowned whisky makers dared to disrupt the traditional distilling process by introducing a second round of maturing. The blend is first matured in sherry-seasoned oak casks, and then for an equal time in ex-bourbon casks.
Normally, the maturing process is carried out in bourbon casks only, followed by a final phase in sherry casks. When the whisky is distributed in 50-50 proportions for the maturation process, the flavour is distinctive, and quite unlike any other whiskies currently available in the market. The knowledge and skills involved in creating this bold and exceptional single malt demonstrate The Macallan’s dedication to pursuing excellence and offering new experiences. It also reflects their unrivalled commitment to the mastery of wood and spirit.
The result is a golden amber coloured whisky, with a sweet butterscotch toffee flavour, also incorporating hints of almond and dried fruit. On the palate, sweet orange and lemon citrus and ginger stand out.
Concept No.1 is more than just a great single malt whisky. The label and packaging of The Macallan Concept Number 1’ features a “surrealistic interpretation of The Macallan’s Six Pillars”, namely the “spiritual home, curiously small stills, the finest cut, exceptional oak casks, natural colour and peerless spirit”.
In line with other limited editions, the entire production of 84000 bottles made their way to airports around the world. The Macallan confirmed that this unique production, born out of a unique experiment, has now come to an end.
We will repeat ourselves: this exclusive edition crafted for global travel retail only, is not available in any liquor store elsewhere in the world.
