Cruise with Penelope Cruz
The Spanish actress is the new Channel brand Ambassador in a campaign inspired by the Cote d’Azur.
Penelope Cruz and Chanel have a close relationship. The actress, possibly one of the most talented artists from contemporary Spanish cinema, was only 19 when she first wore a frock from the Maison to walk the red carpet. By the time she was 25 and already established as a model, she participated in her first Chanel show. It was 1999 when all her doors opened, following a role in ‘All About My Mother’, directed by the multi-award winning Pedro Almodovar, another Spanish Icon.
Since then, the brand and the actress have travelled a long road, meeting at places such as Cannes, the Goya Awards, and the Oscars. We have also seen her wearing Chanel on the big screen. For Almodovar’s film ‘Broken Embraces’, Penelope wore a spectacular black number accessorized with Chanel’s signature gold chains. At the Emmy’s last year, the actress dazzled in a white feathered frock. Only a few days later, she was a vision in black in another classic design from the French house.
This long-lasting relationship has now entered a new phase, as Penelope Cruz is announced as Chanel’s new Brand Ambassador. Furthermore, she was also chosen as the face of their new campaign Cruise 2018/2019. Being one of the most photographed women in the world, a new angle had to be introduced.
To this end, Karl Lagerfeld himself, directed the campaign, in one of his last works before passing away in February. Lagerfeld, one of the most recognizable fashion designers in the history, chose Cruz for Chanel’s Cruise campaign and used black and white photography to evoke a slightly nautical style, reminiscent of boats and seaports. Despite the fact that Penelope is Madrileña through and through, her aura is pure Mediterranean vibes.
Penelope Cruz recently gave an interview to Harper’s Bazaar where she admitted to disliking selfies and being generally uninterested in Social Media. Penelope recognises that platforms such as Instagram can be harnessed for good, launching her own account to promote awareness of children with leukaemia, and encouraging her followers to donate to initiatives supporting children fighting this illness. In fact, her charitable profile is one of the reasons for which why Chanel chose her as a brand ambassador.
Penelope says that Coco Chanel is an authentic inspiration to her, a woman who founded a unique brand that remains a real fashion powerhouse.
Now 44, Penelope joins Margot Robbie and Kristen Stewart for Karl Lagerfeld’s campaign. The result is a production that is equally bold, sensual and grown up. She wears the iconic Chanel tweeds, jerseys and other clothes emblazoned with the inscription ‘La Pausa’. This is a subtle reference to the history of the brand.
‘La Pausa” is the name of the Summer Villa where Coco Chanel used to spend her holidays. Located on the Cote D’Azur, it was commissioned by Hugh Richard Arthur Grosvenor, second Duke of Westminster, who built it for Coco Chanel at the end of the 1920s. The Villa, refuge to some of Chanel’s artist friends such as Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali, was acquired by the Maison in 2015. Iconic and internationally renowned Spanish and global artists, a combination that perfectly suits Penelope’s profile. Penelope Cruz is a totally unique ambassador.
