This tradition is over five centuries old. The custom stems from naval tradition, where a warship would fire its cannons harmlessly out to sea, until all ammunition was spent, to show that it was disarmed, signifying the lack of hostile intent. As naval customs evolved, 21 guns also came to be fired in honour of visiting heads of estate. The British Navy adopted this custom to salute the accession of newly crowned monarchs. The salute would subsequently be extended to celebrate special state occasions, as well as royal events.

The historic royal salute is the inspiration for the exceptional quality whisky range Royal Salute, one of the finest brands available in our duty free stores. The range features whiskies that have been aged for a minimum of 21 years, echoing the 21-gun salute.

On this occasion, Chivas Brothers have launched a deluxe edition named Royal Salute 21 Year Old. This range is characterised by a rich golden amber colour, with potent notes of sweet pears and citric fruit. You can also taste vanilla and toasted oak, highlighted by a subtle, smoky sherry layer. To accompany this edition, a suitable bottle design was created.

Whisky’s flagons are meticulously handcrafted by world-famous artisans at Wade, one of the most traditional British firms. Decorated by hand in a powerful sapphire colour, with golden details reminiscent of the royal dinner set, it is presented in a velvet bag. The trilogy is completed with a formidable packaging box.

Royal Salute 21 was created in 1953 by the Chivas Brothers to celebrate the accession of Queen Elizabeth II to the throne of Great Britain. Charles Julian, Master Blender at the time, was in charge of developing the new Chivas range. He was also an expert in that other British passion: tea. Charles Julian described the characteristic Royal Salute blend as a first-class Scotch that is unforgettable, complex and smooth, with a powerful and sophisticated style.

The tradition continues with Colin Scott, the current Master Blender, who is now the custodian of the signature Chivas Regal style. ”Royal Salute is like an iron fist in a velvet glove. It’s about power and age…” said Scott in an interview with Luxury Insider. Colin Scott was also responsible for the creation of two masterly blends such as Royal Salute 21 Year Old and 62 Gun Salute, some of the most distinguished lines from the Chivas House.

This is a purely British, collectable piece, that is undoubtedly fit for royalty. Every whisky lover should have a bottle of Royal Salute 21 Year Old at home. You can now find yours in our duty free stores worldwide.
