Jean and Jane Ford, twins born on a farm in Indiana, used to dream about earning 33 dollars a day when they first opened The Face Place in 1976, their first makeup boutique in San Francisco. They revolutionised the industry from 1990 onwards. That year, Jean and Jane’s tiny shop was renamed ‘Benefit Cosmetics’.
The company opened another store in a shopping mall in New York under the new name. Soon after they expanded the business to London.
Many years later, the founder’s daughters and nieces still manage Benefit Cosmetics. For the past four years, they have developed a number of educational, and financial assistance and support projects specifically for women. The entrepreneurs subsequently opened Brow Bars in cities around the world, offering a personalised service for more than just eyelashes.
