Chivas 18 Sour

Created towards the end of the 19th Century as a drink to help reduce the distance between the traditional cocktails with high alcohol content, and the newly popular ones created with more sophisticated liquors.

Elliott Stubb was the creator of the Whisky Sour recipe. Elliott, an English steward on a commercial liner, used to dream about one day opening his own bar. His ship docked at the Port of Iquique in Chile, on a very hot day, and Elliott went on deck. Whilst admiring the views, he decided that the Chilean port was to be the setting for his dreams.

After spending some months there, Elliott opened his own bar and created hundreds of new and different recipes. His bar boasted a great cocktail list. As part of his experimenting, he mixed whisky and lemon juice. Elliott did not dislike the mix, and named it ‘Sour’. Afterwards, he decided to add sugar to the recipe, in an attempt to dilute and refine the sour taste. The result is what we today call a ‘Whisky Sour’. If you want to surprise your friends, even more, you can retell this story while they enjoy the cocktail. This is an ideal aperitif to be enjoyed before dinner.

It is believed to have been first created in London, by a headwaiter named Collins, who at the time worked at Limmer's Old House. This was a well-known hotel in Conduit Street, in fashionable Mayfair, London. Not much longer after being created, the original recipe reached New York and was then adapted to the American taste.
